Welcome!

Hello friends.
I'd like to start a conversation among some of my favourite people (you) on a possible camping trip to the North Island (Sointula to be exact) While many of you do not know one another, I think you would all get along famously.
My dream here is to get a group of people together (size doesnt matter big or small) to go to this wonderful place I know. The campsite is on a whale rubbing beach (sometimes as many as 100 Orcas come to rub their bellies there) where it is not unheard of to wake up to the moon and mist and see the glistening backs of an orca and her calf as they peacefully drift past the site, or to be awakened by the sounds of orcas frolicking in the water.
I want you to come on this adventure, hike, laugh, play, sing, cook and eat together with freinds new and old. I am suggesting the August long weekend July 28ish-August 1. Although I am open to other dates too. So if you want to do this with me but those dates dont work speak up, for goodness sake! I would be happy if two of us went or if 20 of us went. I just really, really want to go
I have made this blog for us to use to discuss and plan this trip. I have set it up so that you dont have to sign up to comment, but please sign your name under your posting so we know who said what. http://campingwiththewhales.blogspot.com/
Cant wait to hear what you think!!!

Love the idea!! And I definately want to do that... but I've got a wedding on that weekend.
Is anyone willing to take time off during the week, Tuesday Aug 2 to Sun Aug 7??
~Soo (Susanna)
Great idea, Kate! How long (approx) does it take to get there? Do we need more than 3 days?
Laura
I'd love to go on that trip! Gotta see if I can work around exams, but if so I'm definitely in!! :)
sounds fan-freeekin-tastic! i would be IN IN IN!! and the only long weekend of the summer that i'll get to go camping! couldn't think of a better place to go....
christina
I'd love to go as well but will be in Tofino until Aug 10th & then Harrison until the 14th. Anytime after would be great or I can always join next year! Thanks for the invite :) Kyla
hi kate, i'd love to go. i have coursework until August 12. any plans of going after then? like laura asked, how long will it take? i have a conference for the whole week after the 12th as well, but i would SO love to go.

Sounds super cool!!
I agree with Laura- we might need more than 3 days.
Can I invite some friends?
Cheers
Jodi
Me and my friend Deanna are coming along for sure for the Sointula weekend. We’re gonna take Thurs and Friday off work so we can have an extra long weekend. We will spend sometime mid-way for a couple of nights and meet up with the rest of the group when you guys get up here.
cheers
Jodi
cool!
the aug. long weekend works best for me as i can't take any time off work in august or september. but maybe we should try to take friday the 29th off, if possible, to make it extra long (since it's a long journey and i'd love 3 nights on the whaling beach...

Hi Kate,
That sounds so amazing. I'm not sure if you're now planning a different camping trip to Roberts lake as well or just Roberts lake now...? I can go this weekend but I can't go any other weekend -many weddings and then I fly to TO. I can take time off during the week to go... I could go the 21, 22, 23, but I have to be back for sunday the 24th...
Steph :)
Hi Kate-
here's the answers to the questions you put out today:
1) I have a 2-man tent and will be sharing with my friend Deanna who is coming on the trip (dbhandar@excite.com - you can add her to the distribution list). I also have a small cooking stove and pots.
2) I have a car and will be driving up there. I will be leaving on the 28th and spending a day mid-way. we haven't decided on where. I might have a couple of other friends joining, but if they don't I'll have space for one or two more if anyone wants to leave on the 28th.
3) I don't mind sharing food and I'm willing to partake in a communal eating plan, but preparing big meals with small stoves and pots can be tricky. I also don't eat meat (except sustainable seafood).
4) Me and Deanna are in for sure. You can book us in for the campground. I can get you some $ if you need it.
yay! I'm excited!
Jodi
hey crew!
i have a tiny tent - will squish 2 but can't fit 2 and the pooch, unfortunately... i have an H20 purifier, if we need it. i'm totally into the communal food deal. we can sort a schedule?? i'm gonna try real hard to get the friday off and i MIGHT have access to our co-op vehicle, but someone has dibs over me that weekend. i'll find out this coming week. if i do get it, i'll have room for 5 people.
WEEEEEEEE!!! FUN!
christina
hi everyone, i just met with fellow students in my next graduate level class, which starts on monday. they all said that the instructor gives heavy assignments and readings. considering the course is only 3 weeks i was told that i'd definitely be out of commission for the duration of the course. i'm sorry, i really would've liked to go. the amount of research is just so daunting that i'll need to be at ubc on th weekend. please keep me in mind in the future and have a great time.
meena
i need a ride too.
and i doubt i can get friday off now. not sure how conducive this is to everyone else's plans...raj, i'm emailing you re- renting a car.
christina
Called Budget Rent-A-Car (or Hire-A-Car, depending on where you're from ;) )...
For four days (Thursday night until Monday night), renting the vehicle in Nanaimo, it will cost:
119.69 + tax for a small car (about $32/each + gas for 4 people)
139.96 + tax for a mid-sized car (about $37/each + gas for 4 people)
239.99 + tax for a mini van (about $64/each plus gas for 4 people)
All packages include 800km.
Ferry costs: $10/each/direction... so $20.
Bus is $2.25 each way... so $4.50
Minimum travel cost is $56.50 plus gas.
Maximum travel cost is $88.50 plus gas.
Food, booze, etc are extra (cannot be combined with any other offers).
Ness may be able to take Friday off, so we may be able to get a ride with Jodi and Deanna on Friday morning. Any luck scoring a ride with Kate's friends?
J
So glad to hear that you're all sorting it out to make it up for the weekend. I'm really excited!
Raj - you guys should make a reservation NOW for a car to rent in Nanaimo, cuz it may be crazy busy!! I can take some of your stuff up to Sointula if you want, so you don't have too much stuff to bring over on the ferry (since you'll be going on as foot passengers)
Looks like Deanna, Jamie and I are catching the 10 am ferry on Thursday. We're gonna do some exploring up island and then head over to Sointula on Friday afternoon/evening where we'll meet up with the rest of you cats.
wooooo hoooooo!! fun times ahead!
Jodi
